Daniel Craig and singer-turned-actor Omar Apollo are set to play lovers in the upcoming Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino.

If you saw Challengers, you’ll be aware how sexually charged Guadagnino made a film about tennis, so we have high hopes for Queer.

Speaking to his co-star Drew Starkey (who Craig also has sex scenes with), Apollo speaks about the awareness of his own body in the stripped down scenes.

“I had to get on the soup diet,” he said. “Luca did not tell me to lose weight, but when you’re about to have a sex scene with Daniel Craig, you’re like, ‘Oh, dude, I can’t be looking off.’”

Starkey responded by praising the scenes between the pair as “so good” and “very sensual”.

To get in the mood for the scene, Apollo states that he and Craig were drinking gin and tonics before rolling.

“It was a vibe,” he added. “I had a really cool experience with him. He definitely has this presence to him that is felt from far away. I remember asking him, ‘How do you feel when the camera’s on?’ And he said, ‘To be honest, every time the camera’s on me, I’m terrified.’ I thought that was beautiful. You have to be vulnerable. You have to be open to these emotions. It was such an honest answer.”

Craig – who plays a drug-addicted gay man – has also spoken out about the sex scenes in the film, saying he aimed to make his scenes with Starkey “as touching and as real and as natural as we possibly could”.

At a press conference, he added, “Queer is this emotional thump, a tiny book but an emotional thump.

“It is about love, it’s about loss, it’s about loneliness, it’s about yearning, it’s about all of these things.”
