It’s been nearly a decade since HBO announced the TV dramedy Looking, which promised to be the “gay version” of Sex and the City and Girls.

Following a trio of friends played by Jonathan Groff, Frankie J Alvarez, and Murray Bartlett (who has since blown up on White Lotus and The Last of Us) as they had various misadventures around San Francisco.

The series had plenty of gay sex scenes too, delivering on its premise. We saw Jonathan Groff’s character’s first foray into cruising and outdoor sex and we watched Murray Bartlett fuck twink after twink – living up to his character’s name, Dom.

But the series held its place in gay zeitgeist for its depiction of queer friendship while also showing the messiness of dating your married boss, or keeping a long term relationship alive in America’s gay capital. Even though it was canceled after two seasons the show has earned its place in the gay canon.

It doesn’t hurt that Russel Tovey topped Jonathan Groff many, many times throughout the show’s run too.
