It’s been described by left-wing media as “hilarious”, and the right-wing as “disgusting”, but what exactly were the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus trying to achieve with a song about converting the children?

It seems the Gay Men’s Chorus was attempting satire, in a “tongue-in-cheek” song that was supposed to skew the idea of corrupting children by suggesting they will be turned into accepting people. However, all it seems to have done is just reignite associations of pedophilia with the LGBTQ community.

“You think that we’ll corrupt your kids, if our agenda goes unchecked, funny, just this once you’re correct. We’ll convert your children, happens bit by bit, quietly and subtly, and you will barely notice it.”

Now, as a gay man myself, I have to ask, who thought this was a fucking good idea?

I get the concept. It’s like those videos of us partying in hell because that’s where straight people keep telling us we’re gonna end up. And I understand that the humour derives from the ridiculous idea that our “agenda” is to turn children gay.

However, bringing children into an already delicate discourse that points to members of our community being pedophiles is just – for lack of a better phrase – fucking stupid. Especially when the ‘satire’ didn’t hit the tone it needs to, in order to be widely considered as such.

Unsurprisingly, members of the choir have received threats via social media. But, like, what did you expect?

“The [Youtube] comment that continues to stick out in my head is the one that said ‘We’re going to put lead in your head,” says Chris Verdugo, executive director of the Gay Men’s Chorus.

According to Queerty: SFist also reports that a Twitter user has claimed to have identified men in the video as registered sex offenders. An investigation, however, revealed that the men the user claims to have identified only have similar names and do not match photographs listed in the Megan’s Law database.

While conspiracy theorists put 2 + 2 together and get 666, we’re just wondering who gave this the all-clear?
